Engineered riprap is more than dumping rocks. Each layer has a purpose, and skipping any of them invites failure.
A nonwoven geotextile fabric is placed directly on the bottom or graded surface. The fabric blocks fine soil from washing up through the rock matrix while allowing water passage.
A 6 to 12 inch layer of intermediate-sized stone above the fabric. Provides a stable, free-draining base for the armor layer above.
The visible top layer. Stone size is engineered to resist the wave loading on the site, calculated by methods like Hudson or Van der Meer equations adapted for the Miami wave climate. Typical residential canal sites use 150 to 600 pound stone.
Revetment slope is typically 1.5H:1V for the most economical balance of stability and footprint. The toe is keyed below scour depth to prevent undermining.

Riprap is a layer of large rocks placed at the toe of a seawall or along an unprotected shoreline to absorb wave energy and prevent scour. It is used when wave action is undermining the wall's footing, when an existing wall needs supplementary toe protection without full reconstruction, or where a permit allows soft armoring instead of vertical seawall.
